WHAT A DAY!
STAFF REPORTER

PALMA
MAJORCA suffered its second storm battering in just over a week yesterday with storm-force gales and torrential rain causing havoc across the island.
The heavy rain began around dawn and several areas suffered localised flooding as drains and water coursing systems failed to cope with the drenching. In Palma, a high-pressure jet of water pierced concrete and sent a fountain of rain rising through a hole in a pavement.

Strong winds swept across Majorca from east to west bringing severe rain and causing damage to buildings and blowing down trees.
Streets were deserted as most people remained indoors to escape the persistent rain and biting northeasterly winds. Palma port was closed at 11.15am until 12.40pm and ferry sailings to the mainland were cancelled. Forecasters say the unsettled weather will continue for a few days.

Meanwhile, the Guardia Civil has launched an investigation after a large deserted life raft was mysteriously washed up near the port of Andratx.
It contained ample food and water supplies but was completely empty.

Unions call for airline action
STAFF REPORTER

PALMA
UNIONS in the Balearic Islands yesterday urged Balearic President Francesc Antich to set up a sub-committee within his Transport department to handle what has become the thorny issue of crisis in the airline sector.

The move comes following this year’s job cuts at Palma-based airline Spanair, and Futura and LTE going into administration. The Workers Commission (CCOO)and General Workers Union (UGT) said that the sub-committee should consist of representatives of the unions, the Balearic government, the key airlines, and smaller companies allied to the industry where unemployment is also wreaking havoc.

The demand from the unions will become formal next week when an official petition for the creation of the sub-committee is handed to the Balearic government. The document will formally condemn the current airline sector situation in the region - theoretically a source of 20'000 jobs - which is described by the Unions as “extremely difficult.” They assert that the industry is one of the pillars of regional economy but claim it is being seriously undermined by the financial crisis.

CRICKET CLUB´S PARTY A BIG SUCCESS
MALLORCA Cricket Club’s Annual Dinner Dance at Fernando’s Utopia Restaurant in Port Adriano on Friday evening was attended by more than seventy club members and friends including Her Majesty’s Consul Mr. Paul Abrey and Calvia’s Deputy Mayor Kate Mentink. It was a hugely successful event. Club Chairman Andrew Clemence’s amusing post dinner speech, which preceded the awards, hit exactly the right note. He went on to say how successful the club had been in their charity fundraising events.

The first player to be honoured was young Daniel Clemence who was named the Most Improved Player of the Year.
His father, who commented that Daniel was ‘out chasing girls’ received the trophy in his absence. Fielder of the Year went to ‘Yorkshire Terrier’ Neil Cook; Malcolm Leggett was surprised and patently delighted to pick up the Bowler of the Year trophy; Malcolm is a founder member of the Club which began some twenty two years ago. Batsman of the Year was quite deservedly won by the prolific Steve Bell; unfortunately Steve was unable to attend due to business commitments abroad. Clubman of the Year went to Jeff Hilton. There was no fanfare or roll of drums to herald Mallorca Cricket Club’s Player of the Year award, nonetheless tension mounted as MC Frank Leavers finally announced that dependable all rounder Jon Barratt had been awarded the club’s highest accolade, the trophy was presented by Mr. Paul Abrey. Majorcan Opposition Partido Popular elects new Island President
STAFF REPORTER

PALMA
THE Mayor of the Majorcan town of Selva, Joan Rotger, was yesterday voted in as the new leader of the Opposition Partido Popular (PP) on Majorca by no more than 17 votes over the second candidate, Manacor town councillor Antoni Pastor.

Rotger gained 42.1 percent of the vote, Pastor 33.8 percent whilst 17.9 percent was secured by the ex Mayor of Capdepera, Joan Ferrer. The narrow margins of vote totals made a recount necessary, which resulted in the final announcement, made yesterday at the 10th Partido Popular congress being held in Palma, later than expected.

The election of the Majorcan PP president is carried out by party members as opposed to the public at large so it was 846 people who were committed to casting their vote at the annual congress. Before knowing what the outcome of the election was, the three candidates made individual speeches, which in spite of their differences, signalled that they wanted the Partido Popular to emerge as a stronger group, lending its support to Lluc Tomas who has been sentenced by a regional court for misappropriation of public funds.
