EL PUERTO DE SANTA MARIA, SPAIN
El Puerto de Santa Maria,
Spain, population 70,000, is famed for its matadors, seafood, and bodegas. El Puerto reached its greatest splendor during
the colonizing of the Americas. Columbus spent the years 1483 to 1486 here, when the local lord, the Duke of Medinaceli, showed
interest in his plans for a voyage of discovery, and here he met Juan de la Cosa, owner of the ship the Santa Maria. The splendid
structures built by merchants and adventurers caused it to be called The City of 100 Palaces.
